Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

During WW2 a young pilot and his squadron are sent to a random island where they have to endure dangerous missions and risk their lives every day. But this young pilot, Yossarian, is no ordinary pilot. Yossarian is smart but insanity soon gets to him as he finds out the only way to leave the island is to complete a certain number of missions but as time goes on the number gets higher and higher. They are put in life threatening situations and believe there is someone that always wants to kill them. As the battles rage on numerous sub-plots emerge and just make the nightmare of a life they are living only worse. The war gets to Yossarian's head and he goes mad only to realize that the only way to survive is to abandon the army, and the rules of Catch-22. This is an excellent book and gives you a new perspective on how you view the true underbelly of the world.
